China Marks World Earth Day
Adjust font size:

Kids in a kindergarten in Jinan, Shandong Province, surround a miniature clay earth, attaching additional hand-made plants and animals to it on Saturday, April 21, 2007.

A series of activities were held throughout China on Sunday to mark the 38th World Earth Day.

Organizers said they hoped the activities would boost the national awareness of wildlife protection and energy saving.

More than two million captive fish, including the country’s top-level protected Chinese Sturgeons, were released into the Yangtze River to mark the day.

Many cities and provinces held additional activities, like painting contests, to popularize knowledge among residents concerning environmental protection.

At a World Earth Day celebration in Beijing, the Minister of Land and Resources, Sun Wensheng, called for more attention from Chinese nationals to the undertaking of environmental protection, and the promotion of sustainable development.

Listening to their teacher, kids in a kindergarten in Jinan, Shandong Province, sit at a table on which is placed a clay bird shedding a tear over a withered plant on Saturday, April 21, 2007.
