Holidays and Observances:
1: 85th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China;
 Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day.
11: World Population Day
Langshan Festival, a 12-day-long celebration held in southern Gansu's Tibetan community in the latter half of the sixth lunar month. Activities include horse racing, wrestling, music and dance, and making of religious offerings.
19-21: Torch Festival, days-long main holiday of the Yi ethnic minority. Usually held after the 24th day of the 6th lunar month, although groups living Guizhou Province celebrate it around the 3rd. Activities include music and dance, bullfights and a torch parade.
25: New Year Festival of Tujia ethnic minority. On the 1st day of the 7th lunar month, families prepare delicious food and invite their relatives and friends for a gathering.
31: Double Seventh Festival, a traditional festival of romance on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. Legend has it that the star-crossed Cowherd and the Weaving Girl meet on that evening every year in Heaven.
Notes:
1. In the traditional calendar, the new moon indicates the first day of a lunar month; the full moon marks the 15th day.
2. Dates in red are official holidays. To give workers three week-long holidays during the year, the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding or following the extended holiday are official workdays. In 2006, there are an official work weekend in April, and two divided between late January and early February and between late September and early October.
