Liu Qingbang (劉慶邦) was born to a rural family in Shenqiu, Henan Province, in December 1951. He had previously worked as a farmer, a miner and a reporter. He is now the President of the China Coal Mine Writers Association, Deputy Chairman of the Writers Association of Beijing, First Grade Writer, a State Council Special Allowance Expert, a member of the Beijing People's Political Consultative Conference, and was a member of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth National Committees of the Chinese Writers Association.

His works include seven full-length novels, such as, "The Ballad on the Plain", "The Reddening Coal", "A Land Cast in Moonlight". He has written a total of 30 novellas and essay collections, such as, "A Male Cave Visitor", "Shepherd Sister Mei", "The Land Blanketed in White Blossoms" and "The Whistling Instrument". He has so far published four books under the "Liu Qingbang Novel Series".

His novellas "A Mythological Wood" and "The Misfired Shell" won the second and fourth Lao She Literary Award. His novella "Leaving for the Big City" and full-length novel "Reddening Coal" won the fourth and fifth Beijing Municipality Award. His full-length novel "A Land Cast in Moonlight" was nominated for the eighth Mao Dun Literary Award. The film "The Blind Well", a Silver Bear winner at the 53th Berlin Film Festival, was adapted from his novella "A Mythological Wood". He also won the honorary title of the First Beijing Most Talented and Moral Award and the First Lin Jinlan Award for Outstanding Novella Writers.

His works have been translated into many languages, including English, French, Japanese, Russian, German, Italian, Spanish and Korean.
