The Finn family commenced their Christmas season at the end of November when the German Embassy held its annual Christmas Bazaar.

Christmas paraphernalia was plentiful, including an advent calendar marking the days from Dec 1 to Dec 24. On each day, you open a small door to be rewarded with a piece of chocolate.

"Even if we have to stand in a queue for hours, the kids will not miss the Christmas Bazaar," she said. "They get the opportunity to see Santa Clause, buy Christmas candy and decorations."

On Dec 25, Christmas day, the Finn family wakes up early to open presents and enjoy a traditional breakfast of pancakes and hot chocolate.

Last year, Marie's mother came from France to celebrate Christmas with the family.

This year they will join friends who are also spending Christmas in town.

"When you live as an expat in China. Your friends become almost your new family," she said.

"Back home you celebrate with just the family. Here you invite your friends as well."

The family will attend St. Joseph's church in Wanfujing for Christmas mass.

On returning home, they will join with friends for a festive feast of foie gras (goose liver pate), Champagne and homemade desserts.

"We spend dinner with family and friends, drink wine and sing Christmas carols, and play charades," Finn said.

"We watch It's a Wonderful Life with James Stewart, the classic American Christmas movie."

After that, Finn said they will journey out to Houhai and walk to have an exuberant dinner in a hutong restaurant.

"It is a great way of ending Christmas day," she said.
