Hong Kong is Leung's home, and Hong Kong citizens are his family. Leung was invited to work in the UK by an overseas institution while abroad. However, as a Hong Kong native, he declined the invitation and made his way back to Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, there are about 95 million people living in poverty. Leung insists that the settlement of poverty, especially the inter-generational poverty that detracts from social harmony and stability. Therefore, he gives priority to the wealth gap. He publishes articles on the settlement of poverty in newspapers and writes letters to chambers of commerce. He meets with the leaders of security companies and cleaning companies, calling for an increase in the wages of workers at the grass-roots level. He also advocates increasing the wages of the lowest income earners all around Hong Kong. "Bosses, please think more about grass-roots workers," wrote Leung in his micro-blog. Leung earnestly practices what he advocates. He raised the minimum wage of the employees in his own company.

In August 2007, Leung published his first book “Our Home is Hong Kong,” which was symbolic of his love to Hong Kong and its people. "To build a long-term and stable Hong Kong, we not only need engineering construction, but also a call for public unity. In the past, we have only regarded Hong Kong as our shelter. Presently, 'Our Home is Hong Kong' means treating all Hong Kong people as our family," wrote Leung in his book.

Leung Chun-ying was officially declared the Chief Executive of the HKSAR on March 25, 2012, after which his micro-blog immediately became the focus of public attention. He extended his gratitude to the Election Committee and the masses at a press conference. Hand on heart, he declared to assume major responsibilities with an open mind. With the concerted effort of all local citizens, Hong Kong is bound to be more prosperous, more advanced and fairer. Leung also noted that he would treat the public as his family, accepting the public’s supervision.
