Baita Temple (Temple of White Pagoda) sub-district in central Beijing's Xicheng district is booming with trendy eateries and flagship stores, blending historical Hutong charm with modern commerce. Once a quiet area, it is now a cultural and tourism draw.
Since 2020, Xicheng's renewal project has breathed new life into the area around the over-700-year-old temple by upgrading landscapes and restoring old buildings.
Over 20 restaurants and cafes have sprung up, including creative bakeries, late-night dining options, and craft beer bars, joining longstanding local favorites like grain shops, barbers, and tailor shops.
Located 2 kilometers from the Financial Street to its north and the Palace Museum to its west, the sub-district has surged in popularity, fueled by its history, blend of culture and new business, and social media appeal.
"The continuous renewal effort is key," said Lai Yang of the Beijing Commercial Economics Association. "Yet, sustaining charm requires further balancing commerce with local needs."
