Courteney Cox threw a party to celebrate Barack Obama's success in the American presidential election on Tuesday night.

The "Friends" actress and her husband David Arquette held the bash at their Beverly Hills home, and a host of famous faces - including Jennifer Aniston, Sacha Baron Cohen and his partner Isla Fisher - attended.

David was so excited the democratic candidate - who has made history by becoming America's first African-American President - had won he spent the entire evening cracking open bottles of expensive Cristal champagne and ensuring his guests' glasses were always full.

A source said: "David was in such a good mood, he walked outside his gate and poured champagne for the paparazzi."

Courteney and David are not the only celebrities who were delighted to see Obama triumph.

A visibly emotional Oprah Winfrey watched the new president's victory speech in Chicago - along with Brad Pitt and Jesse Jackson - and revealed she was finding it hard to believe he had actually won.

Oprah said: "It feels like hope won. It feels like there's a shift in consciousness. It feels like something really big and bold has happened here, never in our lifetimes did we expect this to happen."

The TV chat show host also joked she couldn't wait to go home and remove the tags from the dress she bought in anticipation of Obama's inauguration ball.

Other stars have been equally keen to congratulate the new president, with George Clooney, Usher, Pete Wentz and P. Diddy all voicing their approval.

P. Diddy said: "I felt like my vote was the vote that put him into office. That may not be true but that's how much power it felt like I had."

Usher said: "This will go down in history. I'm speechless."
