Arafat's Authority is Key to Peace - FM Spokesman
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said on Tuesday that the now tense situation in the Middle East would be eased if the authority of Yassar Arafat and the Palestinian National Authority under his leadership was maintained.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Tuesday said China regrets the tragic explosions on Sunday in Nigeria's largest city Lagos, which killed over 1,000 people in the city's worst disaster in a decade.


Embassy to Reopen in Afghanistan on February 6
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said in a regular press conference Tuesday that China will reopen its embassy in Afghanistan on February 6.


China-Ukraine Ties to be Furthered - China FM
China appreciates Ukraine's long-term support for it on the Taiwan, Tibet and human rights issues, and will further bilateral ties and cooperation. Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan made the remarks when meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Anatoly Maximovich Zlenko, in Beijing on Monday.


Putin Signs Law Ratifying Historic Treaty With China
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a federal law which makes the historic good-neighborly treaty of friendship and cooperation between Russia and China a binding document to guide future bilateral ties, the Kremlin press service announced Monday.


Zhu Opposes to Expansion of War
China does not support the arbitrary expansion of anti-terrorist military action, and it holds that in combating terrorism there should be no double standards, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Monday in a meeting with Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz, who arrived in Beijing on Sunday for a three-day visit.
