Internet Development Strategies Discussed in Beijing

Chinese government has made great effort and taken various measures to accelerate its Internet development, and China’s Internet industry has stepped into a rapidly growing period, said Yang Zhengquan, deputy minister of the State Council Information Office, Thursday in Beijing.

Yang made these remarks at a seminar on the development and construction strategies of the Internet, which is co-sponsored by Intel Corp., China Internet Information Center (china.org.cn) and chinadaily.com.cn.

He spoke highly of the opportunity provided by the three sponsors which enabled China's Internet practitioners to take a close look at the latest development of the Internet in China and the world.

The number of Chinese Internet users has doubled and redoubled, Internet infrastructure is improving and information on the net is enriching daily, Yang said. A group of websites including china.org.cn, peopledaily.com.cn, xinhuanet.com, cri.com.cn, chinadaily.com.cn and cctv.com have emerged, which have won more and more concerns from home and abroad because of the abundant information they provide.

Both china.org.cn and chinadaily.com.cn have improved their web pages recently. On September 29, 2000, the French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic and Esperanto versions of the china.org.cn became available, thus enabling the website to go on in eight languages. The original versions are in Chinese and English.

Intel was the biggest chip producer in the world. It has set itself a goal to “become a preeminent building block provider to worldwide Internet economy.” James Jarrett, executive vice-president of Intel Corporation, said that Internet imposes a great challenge to traditional publications. He called on people to pay particular needs of traditional publications and embrace the Internet. He showed great satisfaction over cooperation with China Internet Information Center and China Daily.
