Sino-US Relations to See New Development

China hopes and believes that Sino-US relations will see new developments on the basis of the three Sino-US communiques, under the leadership of President-elect George W. Bush.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhu Bangzao made the remark Tuesday in Beijing.

Commenting on the inauguration of US President George W. Bush this coming Saturday, Zhu Bangzao said there are both opportunities and challenges in relations between China and the United States. And China believes under the leadership of George W. Bush, Sino-US relations will see new developments.

Zhu Bangzao said China and the United States are the largest developing and developed countries respectively, and both are permenant members of the UN Security Council.

He said although there have been differences over the past years between the two countries, the development of a healthy and stable relationship is in accordance with the common interests of the two countries and conducive to peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as around the world.

On the issue of the US' NMD and TMD, he reiterated that the United States is the largest country in the world, with the most advanced nuclear weapons. Their action of strenghthening their position with the development of NMD and TMD runs counter to international efforts on arms controls and disarmement. It will bring profound and vast negative effects to the global strategic balance and stability in the 21st century.

Zhu Bangzao said China is deeply concerned about this issue.

The passage of a UN Security Council resolution proposed by China and Russia on maintaining and observing anti-missile treaties reflects the determination of the international community to maintain world peace and stablility.

On Chinese and Russian relations, Zhu Bangzao said the leaders of the two countries agreed to work together to establish good-neighborly and friendly relations during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China last July. This will be conducive to the regional peace and stability.
