SCO to Release List of Common Terrorist Targets

A security group led by China, Russia and four central Asian countries agreed to soon release a list of regional terrorists and terrorist organizations, said an official with the Ministry of Public Security here Wednesday.

According to the official, this constitutes part of the consensus reached by the six member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at a 10-day Defense and Security Forum to push regional security cooperation.

In order to crack down on separatist, terrorist and extremist forces, the member states approved in the consensus to take forceful measures, including issuing the list, severing financial channels for terrorist activities, carrying out education campaigns among the public to fight the three forces, and exchanging anti-terrorist information and enhancing force coordination.

Chinese Vice Minister of Public Security Meng Hongwei said China is ready to join other anti-terrorist organizations to tap the potential of cooperation to fight the three forces.

The organization, consisting of Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, opened a 10-day Defense and Security Forum here Monday.

Vladimir Zakharov, deputy secretary-general of the SCO Secretariat, warned at the forum that the anti-terrorist campaign will be long and arduous as terrorist activities have spread to most regions in the world and are getting more violent.

Many are trying to influence public opinion in their home lands and the international community and establish regimes that integrate church and state.

"Terrorism, separatism and extremism are common threats facing all member states and cannot be done away with by any country alone," said Chinese diplomat Zhang Xiao, urging SCO member nations to work together to ensure regional stability and security.

Nearly 30 military officers from the six states, as well as Mongolia, Pakistan, Iran and India are attending the forum.
