Shopping ABC in Beiijng
Is it possible to bargain in most shops?

The prices of goods at large department stores and shops are generally fixed. But at the indoor and outdoor market, such as Xiushui (Silk Market), Hongqiao, and Yaxiu, you can bargain with merchants. Skilled bargainers usually cut the asking price by half and then increase it a little to reach a deal.

What are the business hours of most shops and markets?

Generally, shops in major commercial districts, such as Wangfujing and Xidan, are open from 9:00 to 22:00 (closing time is an hour earlier in winter). Other shops and markets close at 5 or 6 o?clock in the evening. Knowing the business hours of the shops you?d like to go to can help you manage your time while shopping.

What if I am not satisfied with the goods I have purchased?

In China, different goods are subject to different regulations concerning return and exchange. When purchasing, you should hold on to your receipts and ask the sales assistants about the shop?s return and exchange policy. Most of the shops in Beijing provide satisfactory service when it comes to returning and exchanging goods.

What should I do in case a dispute occurs while shopping?

Shopping disputes rarely happen in Beijing. But in case they do, don?t worry. At large shopping malls, duty managers are ready to help, while at the indoor and outdoor markets you can ask the market administrative departments to solve the problem. If you still feel unsatisfied, you can complain to the Beijing Industrial and Commercial Administration by dialing its hotline: 010-12315

What should I do I in case of emergency?

In case of accident or emergency, dial 110 for help. At present ?110? alarm apparatuses have been installed on streets in Xidan and other commercial districts, bring convenience to people in need.

Are there any restrictions on taking goods out of the country?

Be careful when purchasing articles in the following categories: ?animals and plants (both including specimens) as well as their seeds and reproducing materials?, ?culture relics?, and ?rare and precious medicinal herbs?. It is prohibited to take certain articles out of the country. So if you are interested in purchasing any of the goods in the above-mentioned categories, make sure you ask a salesperson whether or not you are allowed to take them out of China. For detailed regulations concerning the prohibition and restriction of goods leaving the country, check the relevant websites or inquire at Chinese customs.
