China says the UN Security Council's reform should be prudent to avoid counter-productive result.

Chinese deputy permanent representative to the United Nations Zhang Yishan said that to force a vote on the reform plan may run counter to its original objective.

Zhang Yishan made the comment on Tuesday at the discussion on UN Security Council reform on the 59th UN General Assembly.

The deputy representative warned that the rush for Security Council reform would lead to split and confrontation among UN members.

It would neither intensify the council's authority nor strengthen its functions.

Meanwhile, Zhang Yishan notes that the Security Council reform is the core of the UN reform.

China firmly believes the reform should consolidate the council's central role in safeguarding world peace and security and strengthen its capability of coping with threats and challenges.

In addition, Zhang Yishan suggests that priority should be given to enlarge the membership of developing countries on the basis of impartial geographic distribution.
