Train Derailed by Buffaloes in Zimbabwe

A Bulawayo-bound National Railways of Zimbabwe passenger train from Victoria Falls derailed Saturday night near Dibamombe siding after hitting a herd of buffaloes.

The derailment came barely two weeks after another train accident killed eight people and injured scores of passengers almost at the same scene.

Reports from Victoria Falls said the derailment took place at about 8 p.m.

The NRZ public relations manager Fanuel Masikati confirmed the accident, adding that no injuries or deaths were reported.

"Our passenger train from Victoria Falls derailed just near Dibamombe siding. The train was being pulled by two locomotives and the one that hit the buffalo derailed, while the other one was halfway off the track," he said. "Our cranes are still in that area and we are going to put it back on the track and services are going to resume very soon," he added.

The NRZ opened the Victoria Falls track to trains on Tuesday this week after the Dibamombe accident.
