New UN climate chief Christiana Figueres urged governments to make further progress in dealing world climate change on Thursday, just a few weeks before new round of UN climate talks.

"Governments must set full sail ahead to capture the powerful winds of change that humanity is wanting to release," Figueres said at a press conference in Bonn.

"In Cancun, governments can set those sails higher. They can capture pledges they have made and begin to implement them," she said.

She also asked industrialized countries to further raise their pledges on emission cutting as their current commitment is well below the requirements for the 2 degree consensus.

Figueres also showed her optimism on the further climate talks, saying "governments seem on track to agree to a comprehensive set of ways and means to allow developing countries to take concrete climate action.""This includes adapting to climate change, limiting emissions growth; getting adequate finance; boosting use of technology; promoting sustainable forestry; and building up the skills and capacity to do all this,"She said.

Figueres cherished the progress has been made since the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) began in Rio in 1992, but she stressed that "the idea that a single magic, global agreement could solve all climate issues does not do justice to the crucial steps already achieved and, most importantly, dangerously ignores the need to keep innovating."

Christiana Figueres substituted Yvo de Boer as the new Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC from July 8. From August 2 to 6, a new round of UN climate change talks will convene in Bonn again.
