"UN Headquarters building in New York is closed today, Thursday, 27 January 2011 due to inclement weather. All meetings have been canceled," said the UN spokesperson's office in an email sending to reporters.

The UN website for staff information also made the same announcement.

This is the second time the UN Headquarters complex closed since the Dec. 26 storm, which trapped hundreds of buses and ambulances, and led the UN headquarters closed on Dec. 27.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared a weather emergency Wednesday.

The snow started falling around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning (1300 GMT) with the National Weather Service issuing a winter storm warning in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday.

According the Weather Channel, the New York City picked up a whopping 19 inches (about 48 centimeters) snow. For the month, the city now has piled on between 36-38 inches (about 91-96 centimeters) making January 2011 the snowiest January on record. The city typically sees just 21 inches (about 53 centimeters) for the whole season.

Two major New York-area airports, LaGuardia and Kennedy, were closed but expected to reopen later in the day as cleanup continued.
