CPPCC members gather in different categories today to exchange their ideas on hot topics. This group meeting of education elites from across the country focuses on vocational training. Members say it's more important than ever in the face of economic difficulties.

Sun Hengchao founded his vocational college in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region ten years ago. He invested a hundred million yuan to train talents in science and enginnering. He did it because he needed skilled workers for his own factory. Now, Sun Hengchao's students go nationwide. But he wants to do more.

Sun Hengchao said, "Investment in job training is far from enough. Vocational schools often need the money to buy equipment for hands-on training. And they must always help students update their practical skills to satisfy market needs."

But it's not just money that concerns the entrepreneur. Developing job training programs requires people to have a different mindset.

Sun Hengchao also said, "People usually think universities are superior to professional schools, so many schools who are doing well choose to give up their programs and instead, transform into universities. This is a pity, a very huge loss."

And Sun's idea appeals to the president of China's prestigous Tsinghua University.

Gu Binglin said, "Vocational training is extremely imporant in China. Successful vocational training programs effectively gurantee employment. The pursuit of knowledge and skill should surpass the pursuit of certificates and diplomas."

With its huge population, China's job market is now facing a worker surplus. And an increasing number of rural Chinese are flocking to cities looking for jobs. CPPCC members like Sun say proper vocational training will equip most people with the necessary skills to fill a niche.

Being able to make a living is more important than any degree. Chinese place high value on academics, but that's not enough, and it's not for everyone. Vocational training is vital part of education that no one can afford to ignore. And CPPCC members want to make sure the country pays attention.
