Senior Party official on cultural reform
Adjust font size:

A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called for efforts to resolve deep-rooted problems affecting and blocking a scientific development in the country's cultural sector, by emancipating and developing cultural productivity and pushing forward the great development and prosperity of the social culture.

Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the call during his tour in east China's Zhejiang Province, on June 5-9, to study local economic development and cultural reforms.

The senior Party official visited factories, communities, villages, markets, schools and cultural institutions. He also heard reports on the issue by the Party committee and government of Zhejiang, one of the fast developed coastal provinces.

In talks with local officials, Li praised Zhejiang for its bold experiments in restructuring the cultural sector and its efforts to develop cultural facilities for the public in a creative way, such as the establishment of public libraries in Jiaxing City that are open to both urban and rural readers.

He also visited some companies that are involved in cultural reforms or have engaged in cultural businesses, such as the Song City Group, a private company that has staged a dancing opera fearing history, culture and arts in ancient and modern times, and the Hengdian Group, which has been known for its success in building up a Film and TV industry zone.

Zhejiang should continue to display its bold and creative spirits and further deepen cultural reforms, to provide latest experiences for other areas of the country, Li said.

Li paid a visit to the Nanhu Lake Memorial Hall in Jiaxing, which honors the First Congress of the CPC, in July, 1921. The lake is one of the venues for the congress that marks the birth of the Party.

This year is the 60th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
