Chinese, Irish leaders exchange congratulatory messages
Adjust font size:

Chinese President Hu Jintao and Irish President Mary McAleese on Monday exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

In his message, President Hu said China-Ireland relations have developed steadily over the past 30 years, with high-level exchanges becoming more frequent, political trust being enhanced, and economic and trade cooperation being expanded.

Hu said bilateral cooperation has been fruitful in such fields as science and technology, education and culture, and the two countries have also closely coordinated in dealing with international multilateral affairs.

He said China appreciates Ireland's adherence to the one-China policy and its efforts in pushing forward the all-round strategic partnership between China and Europe.

Hu said despite different historical backgrounds, cultural traditions and development levels, both countries have no fundamental conflict of interests nor pending issues. He said to further develop the long-term stable and friendly cooperation on the basis of equality and reciprocality is not only in the interests of the two peoples, but also for peace and development in the world.

China is willing to work with Ireland to strengthen dialogue and exchanges at all levels and to deepen pragmatic cooperation in various fields on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit so as to build the China-Ireland relationship into an exemplary one between countries of different social systems, Hu said.

McAleese said the bilateral ties have achieved full development over the past 30 years during which mutual understanding and cooperation have deepened, and cultural exchanges have laid the foundation for an enduring and energetic friendship between Ireland and China.

China's reform and opening-up, McAleese said, is of far-reaching historic significance, and those who benefit from it are not only the Chinese people, but the whole world.

McAleese said China plays an important role on regional and international stages, and is set to make greater contributions in international affairs.
