| Giant unmanned airships could soon provide cover for British soldiers in Afghanistan. The LEMV (Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle) is being developed by a team of British and American engineers and will give troops on the ground valuable surveillance information. Filled with helium and packed with reconnaissance systems, the drone will be able to operate autonomously at altitudes of around 22,000 feet for 21 days at a time and travel at speeds of up to 80 knots. It will become the world's longest endurance unmanned aerial vehicle. |

| On Monday Switzerland refused to extradite director Roman Polanski to California for sentencing on a 30-year-old sex crime because of potential technical faults in the US request for extradition. Polanski, 76, who admitted to drugging and having sex with a 13-year-old girl in California in 1977, was released from house arrest at his Swiss chalet in Gstaad. The US State Department said it would continue to pursue justice. Polanski won a best director Oscar for his 2002 World War Two movie "The Pianist". |

| Filmmaker Jason Glaser, who went to Nicaragua to make a documentary, has testified in a civil lawsuit that he was an undercover operative for a Texas law firm that was suing Dole Foods on behalf of Nicaraguan banana plantation workers who claim they were left sterile by pesticide exposure. "I decided the film wasn't going to change a lot in this world," Glaser said. "I decided to work with the firm and help with the legal process." |

| Australian scientists have created a mobile phone that can make and receive calls in places that would normally have no reception, according to the Daily Telegraph. The phones contain a built-in mini-tower that allows them to connect to other phones via Wi-Fi and create their own network. Researchers devised the phones to work in the event of a natural disaster or terrorist attack when normal mobile phone services have been cut off. |
