| Special campaigns will be carried out in Sept. and Oct. to eradicate "gutter oil" which can cause cancer, according to a circular issued Monday by the State Council. Gutter oil, usually made from refined kitchen waste, was once commonly used by small restaurants, according to media reports. The campaign will target places where gutter oil is produced as well as small restaurants and school cafeterias. Catering establishments which use the illegal oil could face punishments ranging from suspension of operations to revocation of their business licenses. |
國務院周一發文，宣布今年9月至10月將開展旨在根除“地溝油”的專項整治活動。會誘發癌癥的地溝油大多由餐廚廢棄物提煉制作而成，此前據媒體報道，小型飯館普遍使用地溝油。此次整治將排查清理生產地溝油的窩點，也會加強對小型飯館以及學校餐廳的餐廚廢棄物管理。使用地溝油的餐飲企業將被暫停營業資格，嚴重的則被吊銷營業執照。

Yesterday, Liu Yiliang, former Board Chairman of Beijing Golden Keys Real Estate, was sentenced to 8 years for defiance and extortion by the People's Court of Haidian District, Beijing. This is his second time as a prisoner, his elder brother Liu Yongke and 15 executive leaders of the company were also sent to jail.

About 3 million people turned a portion of the A40 Autobahn where cars normally cruise at speeds of 160 kph or more into one of the biggest open-air festivals in Germany's history on July 18. 60 km of the busy highway between the western German cities of Dortmund and Duisburg were closed to motorists so pedestrians, cyclists, skaters and picnickers could participate in what organizers called "the longest banquet in the world." The event called "Still Life" was part of celebrations for the Ruhr region Cultural Capital of Europe 2010.

The recent launch of a UK company means going out alone may be a thing of the past. Rent A Friend has a website where people can rent companions to accompany them to the movies, museums or shopping. In the United States, 2,000 paid subscribers have access to 218,000 potential friends. Scott Rosenbaum who founded the service said his website is strictly platonic.
