| Astronomers have found a solar system similar to ours, the Christian Science Monitor reports. They have identified up to seven planets orbiting a Sun-like star, including a rocky planet about 1.5 times the size of the Earth. The star, labelled HD10180, is 127 light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Hydra, the water snake. The European Southern Observatory made the discovery recently with the help of a giant telescope on a mountaintop in Chile. There is growing evidence that planets like ours are commonplace in the galaxy, providing more and more potential locations for life to have developed. |

| The U.S. State Department has confirmed that the U.S. government has approved the sale of defense radar equipment to Taiwan, Reuters reported August 24. The Pentagon says the sales will bolster the island's defense capabilities, which are increasingly being outpaced by the mainland. The State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told a news briefing: "The authorizing of these exports is fully consistent with the U.S. One-China policy." |

| Chongqing police have detained three couples who had been robbing bus passengers after distracting them with displays of intimacy, the Chongqing Evening News reported. The six suspects are from Guizhou Province. According to one of them, after spotting their prey on the bus, they would begin hugging, kissing and performing other intimate acts under the nose of the passenger. One of them would then choose the right moment to carry out the theft. |

| Jimena Navarrete, a 22-year-old model from Mexico, was named Miss Universe in Las Vegas on Monday, extending Latin America's domination of the pageant to three consecutive years, Reuters reported. The runner-up was Miss Jamaica, Yendi Phillipps, while Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell, took third place. Miss Ukraine, Anna Poslavska came in fourth, ahead of Miss Philippines, Venus Raj. Navarrete is the second Mexican to take the crown, following Lupita Jones in 1991. Venezuela claimed the title in 2008 and 2009, but in a surprise outcome the country failed to make it past the first cut this year, when the 83 contestants were reduced to 15. |

In California, repeat drunk drivers are even made to visit mortuaries to view mutilated corpses so as to impress on them the serious consequences of drunk driving. |

| A Polish man living in Germany went about his business for five years without noticing he had been shot in the head, Reuters reports. Doctors found a 0.22 caliber bullet in his scalp after the 35-year-old went to hospital to have what he thought was a cyst removed. The man recalled having received a blow to the head at a New Year's party "in 2004 or 2005," but had forgotten about it because he was "very drunk". Police said that the bullet might have fallen and lodged in the man's head after a reveler fired into the air to celebrate New Year. |
