The American giant, for the first time, admitted poisoning cases at a Chinese factory and said: "In 2010, we learned that 137 workers at the Suzhou facility of Wintek, one of Apple's suppliers, had suffered adverse health effects following exposure to n-hexane." Apple required Wintek to "to stop using n-hexane" and "fix their ventilation system." Wintek had "paid medical treatment, meals and compensation for sick or recuperating workers," and majority of affected workers had returned to work, the report said. But Jia Jingchuan, a worker at Wintek, disputed this and told the Beijing Morning Post that he and some other workers were pressured to quit if they wanted to receive any medical compensation. |
Meanwhile, Apple found more than 91 children working for its suppliers last year, nine times as many as the previous year. It ordered most to pay the children's education costs and fired one contractor that employed 42 minors. |
