Western Media Praise "Productive" Third Round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue

U.S. agencies and international media followed closely and are speaking highly of the third round of China-U.S. strategic and economic dialogues held in Washington D.C. on May 9 and 10, 2011.

The United States-China Business Council issued a statement after the session, confirming the round had been fruitful. Council President John Frisbie said the dialogues show expanding China-U.S. business relationship weighs more and more in the two countries' relationship, and participation and contact from the U.S. side should increase, instead of decreasing. Although differences between the two countries still exist, there would be positive results so long as the two countries kept in touch, he said. The United States-China Business Council supports the Obama administration's development of a more constructive and sustainable relationship with China.

Richard Buangan, press spokesman of the U.S. Embassy in China, said in an interview with People's Daily the annual strategic and economic dialogue was a strategic mechanism that pointed out directions for China-U.S. cooperation. He said he thinks President Hu Jintao's visit to the United States has injected vitality into the China-U.S. relationship. President Hu's activities in the United States have given the dialogues a 'more human' face. Especially, during his visit to Chicago's Walter Payton College Preparatory High School, President Hu's communication with the students in Chinese symbolized China-U.S. relationship had made great headway.

CNN reported: The world's two largest economies gathered in Washington for meetings. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said benefits from China-U.S. cooperation outweigh conflicts. A prosperous China is conducive to the United States and vice versa.

The Wall Street Journal published a comment entitled America Gains from Chinese Investment on its editorial page during May, saying, apart from traditional macroeconomic issues such as exchange rates, market access and the like, a new topic has burst on the scene: Direct investment by Chinese firms in the United States. During the strategic and economic dialogues over the past two years direct investments by Chinese firms in the U.S. have grown more than 130 percent a year. The U.S. will be the major beneficiary of China's increasing foreign direct investments. Chinese investments will bring a lot of jobs and boost the U.S. economy. The Journal published an article on May 11: U.S.-China Talks Make Progress on Market Access. The article said the strategic and economic dialogue offers a chance for the two countries to settle trade policy disagreements and other problems. On the condition of concessions on both sides, the two sides reached a long list of agreements on trade and economic issues. Clinton said after the conference the third round of China-U.S. strategic and economic dialogue has further strengthened the two countries' mutual understanding. Another Wall Street Journal report mentions the dialogue between the world's largest and second largest economies opened in a friendly atmosphere. Both sides have explicit goals. The U.S. hopes China will encourage domestic demand and enhance intellectual property rights protection. China said the U.S. side must meet the Chinese side's requests, including relaxing control over high-tech product export limitations, fully acknowledging China's market economy status, granting Chinese businesses fair investment opportunities and avoiding politicizing economic and trade issues.

Agency France Press (AFP) said in a May 12 report the third round of China-U.S. strategic and economic dialogue ended up with the signing of the full framework of China-U.S. economic cooperation, and this will guide the two economies' economic development.

Reuters reported this round of dialogue brought gains beyond analysts' expectations.

Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao said this round of dialogue attracted special attention because of the participation by senior members of the two courtiers' military forces. Particularly, the new move to include high-level Chinese military delegates highlighted the two's virtuous interaction in military areas. Another report mentioned despite disagreements on many topics, the finally signed agreements shows the two sides mean to stress the importance of cooperation between the world's largest two economies.

World Daily of Thailand said, after two days' of dialogue, both the United States and China say they have made big steps forward and listed 48 outcomes conducive to the development of their bilateral cooperative partnership. As well, high-level national defense officers from both sides for the first time conducted dialogue on strategic security, and both sides agreed to hold regular strategic security dialogues and set up a consultation mechanism for the Asian-Pacific region.
