Roger Federer overcame his recent losses to Guillermo Canas, crushing the 14th-ranked Argentine 6-0, 6-3 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals at the Madrid Masters.

The world No.1 Swiss broke Canas to love in the second game. Two more breaks of serve gave Federer the first set in 21 minutes.

Canas, who beat Federer in back-to-back tournaments in March, held serve to make it 1-1 in the second set. But Federer, the defending champion, came to the net to score 14 of his overall 17 winners in the second set.

Federer broke Canas again in the sixth game before holding his serve for the rest of the way.

In the quarterfinals, Federer will play the winner between Spanish wild card Feliciano Lopez and Austrian qualifier Stefan Koubek.

Third-ranked Novak Djokovic beat Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to also advance to the quarterfinals.

Earlier, fifth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile broke three times to beat Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-4, 6-2.

Second-ranked Rafael Nadal had a tough match later Thursday against the 17th-ranked Andy Murray of Britain, who has rolled over his first two opponents.
