Garbage treatment problem in China

Garbage treatment is a crucial issue for all nations, and China is no exception. Separating garbage, before it is put into incinerators can help reduce pollution.

This is one of Beijing's largest garbage treatment companies. It deals with 16 thousands tons of household garbage each day. The capacity of their trucks is about 25 tons, and they need about 800 trucks to transport all the garbage.

Wu Jixu, Director of Guozhong Biotech, said, "In medium-sized cities, each people produces an average 0.75 to 1 kilo of waste every day. That works out about 500 to 1000 tons of garbage daily."

Garbage can be reduced by 20-percent by burning, and the heat it produces can generate electricity. But the problem is burning waste release a kind of poison, which is harmful to the environment and humans. A joint release by the nine Chinese governmental departments early this month sets the rules to control the toxic chemical.

A volunteer from a Taiwan environmental organization went to many cities on the Chinese mainland to share his knowledge about the efficient waste treatment in the island.

Lai Wei-Chieh, volunteer from Taiwan, said, "It is a systemic problem, how to efficiently collect waste and build a recyclable economy is a very important step. In Taiwan, I experienced that every Saturday afternoon, all the residents in one neighborhood go outside with their household garbage, putting them in a fixed place and separate them."

At the "Garbage treatment in Chinese cities forum" held in Hangzhou Saturday, experts and volunteers called for more attention to be paid to garbage produced each day. They say that no single solution is perfect for the treatment of household garbage, unless the changes can be implemented.

Reporter Xue Jingmeng said, "Garbage has become a big problem in most Chinese cities. According to one expert at the forum, we should separate recyclable and non-recyclable substance first. Otherwise, we can't implement the initiative to use incinerators.
