To become one of the most innovative countries in 4 years' time, a leading innovator by 2030, and a powerhouse in science and technology by 2050. That's President Xi Jinping's blueprint for China's development in the science and technology research sector.

Xi made the remarks at the top science event in China, where the most brilliant brains from across the country had gathered, including top scientists from two Chinese leading think tanks: the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

In his speech, Xi Jinping called for good judgement on the direction of research breakthroughs in order to become world leaders. He said the Chinese government will further invest in major research fields heavily related to China's development strategy.

Xi also urged scientists to adapt their research theories to be of benefit to real life, so that they provide people with a better environment, safer food and higher standards in healthcare. All levels of governments are required to promote reform, and aim to encourage innovation and research in academic institutions and companies.

Xi Jinping also stressed the significance of talent, and promised to create a better environment for researchers. He said this would involve less limitations, more resources and easier access to research funds.
