Flash floods in West Papua of Indonesia have killed at least 86 people, seriously wounded 91 others and left 40 people missing, officials said on Wednesday.

The rescue and the evacuation have been hampered by huge amount of mud submerging most of the area and poor access to the scene as many trees have fallen on the roads since the floods occurred on Monday in Wasior town of Teluk Wondama district, Coordinator of rescuer at local Search and Rescue Office Muhammad said. "The rescuers must walk and conduct their work with bare hands as there are no machinery equipment that can enter to the scene," Arifin told Xinhua by phone from Sorong town of West Papua.

The floods have damaged most of infrastructure in the district, he said.

"Eighty percent of the infrastructure have been damaged, including bridge, buildings and houses," he said.

Airport can not be operated because of being submerged by mud, one bridge has been damaged, telecommunication has been cut off and electricity facility has been cut, according to him. Dozens of houses have been damaged, said Arifin.

The coordinator of the rescuer said that the total fatality has reached 86 and the rescuers keep searching from 30 to 40 missing persons.

Over 100 persons have been internally displaced and some of aids have already distributed, he said.

Head of crisis center of Health Ministry who goes with single name Mujiharto said that 91 people had suffered from serious injury and been treated at several nearby hospitals. Over 460 people got minor injury, he said.

The floods have also damaged dozen of houses, according to the official.

Floods and landslides frequently happen in Indonesia particularly during the wet season, which annually and regularly takes places from December to April, but for this year it occurs longer.
