Int'l pressures fall on deaf ears in Syria

The Security Council has built up pressure on Syria, whose four-month-old crisis is taking in an escalated riotous and even atrocious aspect, by issuing Wednesday a unanimous statement condemning Syrian forces for allegedly attacking civilians and committing human rights violations.

The UN statement calls on Syrian authorities to immediately end all violence and launch an inclusive political process that would allow the Syrian people to fully exercise fundamental freedom, including that of expression and peaceful assembly.

Syria's official TV chastised the statement as "unwarranted" that has misstated facts about what is really going on in Syria of "atrocities" like vandalism against public properties, slaughtering and corpses' mutilations, and intimidation of residents, especially in the central provinces of Homs and Hama and the northern areas of Idlib and nearby towns.

Syria blames the violent acts on armed thugs and ultraconservative Muslims who want to establish Islamic emirates nationwide, pledging that there would be no letup in its crackdown on those gunmen to restore stability and security to the country.

Syria's state TV is airing, on a daily basis, atrocities committed by alleged gunmen coupled with interviews with wounded policemen and army officers in hospitals, which was miffed when the United States and the European Union (EU) countries and other Arab TV satellite channels intentionally disregarded.

Taleb Ibrahim, an analyst, told Xinhua by phone that the UN statement was "unreasonable and unbalanced" because it didn't mention the presence of gunmen in the country.

"In fact, part of the events in Syria is a war on terrorism," he said, adding that the government is fighting "terrorist and Takfiri groups that killed civilians, army officers and policemen. "

The Syrian TV said Thursday the council's statement is leaping over facts by not mentioning the killings among policemen and army officers. It said 23 policemen and army officers were killed Wednesday, in one single day.

Taleb added the council also disregarded the reform steps taken by the government, adding that the Security Council should find political solutions to world crises rather than "being a place for nourishing internal tension."

The Syrian response to the statement was quick. Syrian President Bashar Assad ratified Thursday two controversial legislative decrees pertaining to multi-party and public elections laws, which Syria's official SANA new agency said aim to enable all Syrians to participate in the political life on peaceful and democratic ground.

The measure capped other earlier reform steps, has come to ease up restraints in the country and demonstrate the government's resolve to overhaul the country's political and economic systems.
