About 30 protesters who share the general anger over the way that corporate financial institutions derailed the U.S. economy, gathered on Monday along a narrow sidewalk in Chicago's financial district, outside a branch of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Some said they've occupied the corner near the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for 10 consecutive days. More than 100 gathered Sunday for an organizational meeting that was labeled the general assembly, in which anyone can participate.

The peaceful protest has grown from less than five "occupiers" at the start of the event on September 24 to some 50 during daytime, with a dedicated few who stayed overnight, local media said. "'Occupy Chicago' is here to fight corporate abuse of American democracy in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world," said a mission statement on the website of "Occupy Chicago. "

"When I heard about Occupy Wall Street, I knew my prayers were answered. I have always said that the corporations own our country, and they are destroying it," one supporter noted on the website.

"There is no common sense anymore in America. It's time that our government knows that the USA is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. NOT for the corporations and the wealthiest!! It's time to take it back. I proudly stand with you," another commented.

According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the unemployment rate in the Chicago metropolitan area rose to 10. 4 percent in August from 9.7 percent a year earlier. The Chicago area was the only metropolitan area in the state to show an increase.
