East Asian countries should further promote media cooperation and the media in the region should strive to have a stronger say in the global arena, a senior Chinese official said Thursday.

Speaking at the 2nd Conference of the ASEAN Plus Three Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI+3), Wang Chen, minister of the State Council Information Office of China, said East Asian countries should encourage international media to cover the region in a more objective and accurate manner.

"We must catch the trend of regional cooperation, report regional affairs from a local point-of-view and try to have a stronger say in the international arena," he said.

The conference, inaugurated by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, involved ministers and senior officials responsible for information from 10 Asean Countries as well as China, Japan and South Korea.

The AMRI+3 conference shoulders the responsibility of boosting regional media exchanges and cooperation, promoting the participation and support of all social forces and fostering an atmosphere favorable for the building of a peaceful, prosperous and harmonious East Asia, said Wang.

Since the first conference held in Laos in 2009, media exchanges and cooperation between China and ASEAN countries, Japan and the South Korea have gained momentum, he said.

The Chinese minister also shared his view on how to promote dynamic and effective media exchanges and cooperation among"10+3" countries, saying the governments should give full play to media's social responsibilities and major functions so as to promote peace, prosperity and development in the region.

Meanwhile, East Asian countries should further improve the quality and effectiveness of media exchanges and cooperation, as well as enhance the exchanges of new media and share useful experiences on their development and administration.

In a statement after the conference, the ministers acknowledged that social media is emerging as the fastest growing medium of communication in the region.

Wang promised that the State Council Information Office of China will continue to play an important role in facilitating media cooperation in East Asia, further intensify the contacts between media from China and other countries in the region, and continue to explore opportunities of cooperation in news production, dissemination and marketing.

"We will try to help different peoples in this region better understand each other's history, culture and current developments, " he said.

The next AMRI+3 conference will be held in Myanmar in 2014.
