The Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) , a world parliamentary body of 162 countries, will send a strong delegation on a fact finding mission to assess the situation in Syria, according to official sources.

Anders Johnson, IPU Secretary General, told reporters in Kampala on Thursday that the delegation will go on a fact finding mission to assess the violence and human rights abuses in Syria.

The move is a result of the IPU initiative for an immediate halt to the bloodshed and humanitarian rights violations in Syria and access to humanitarian aid for all persons in need.

"It's a global effort. It's a labor from Arab, Africa and the whole world. The mission will assess on what is on the ground and report back to IPU president, Arab League and UN on the current situation," said Johnson at a media briefing in Kampala.

In a press release issued in Kampala at the closure of the six-day conference that brought over 2,000 delegates, the IPU said the mission will take necessary measures to help end the bloodshed and human suffering in the country.

The Syria violence overshadowed the assembly opened in the Ugandan capital Kampala on Saturday.
