The illiteracy rate reached 95 percent and the school enrollment rate only 2 percent. Through the efforts of more than 50 years, a comparatively integrated education system, including preschool education, elementary and secondary education, higher education, vocational education, special education and adult education, has been shaped. More Science and Technology In 2006, not only did Tibet make much headway in introducing, assimilating and popularizing advanced applicable technologies, but also strengthened its independent research and developing ability. Science and technologies played a much more important role in supporting and leading economic construction and social development. The year saw Tibetan research specialist staff undertake 25 State scientific and technological programs and 121 key scientific and technological programs at autonomous region level, with 28 items of scientific and technological achievement above provincial and ministry level. In addition, it submitted 89 patent applications, 81 of which were authorized. More Culture In 2006, mass literary and art workers in Tibet produced a large number of programs enjoying public popularity. More Healthcare There were no modern medical and healthcare institutions in the old days. The PLA initiated public health undertakings once it had peacefully liberated Tibet in 1951. More Sports In 2006, Tibet built one activity center for citizen fitness. Tibetan athletes won two gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals in competitive sports matches at home and abroad. In the same year, Tibet made 20.17 million Yuan by selling sports lotteries and collected public welfare funds to the tune of 6.56 million Yuan. More
