這個短語的來源至少有兩種，其中之一是說，早在超市出現之前，人們通常在當地的市場買菜和家禽。在一些特殊的場合（如節日盛宴），乳豬是采購單上一樣很搶手的食物。由于乳豬會亂動，當顧客挑選好并結賬后，商人為了運送方便就把豬塞進一個帆布口袋（poke）里遞給顧客。

a white elephant 這個短語是來源于印度，由于印度人是很崇拜大象的，對于大象尤其是白象視若神靈。印度規定，白象是不可以宰殺、干活的，擁有白象的人家要好好地養著它，不可以虐待它，直到它死去。所以人們將白象視為一種累贅，這也就是 white elephant 的由來。
由于 white elephant 有上述的意思，因而出現了 a white elephant sale（白象義賣）。不過這種以慈善為目的的義賣，所賣的不是白象，而是有心人士所捐出的家里不再需要之物品。
