| The principal defendant in China's biggest mobile phone smuggling case was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve yesterday by a court in Zhuhai, the Guangzhou Daily reports. From 2006 to 2008, Huang Xiaokai and his gang smuggled more than 5.26 million mobile phones, worth 7.8 billion yuan, from Hong Kong, evading taxes and duty of over 1.1 billion yuan. |

| Some New York cabbies are wearing bullet-proof vests as part of a pilot program developed in response to assaults on drivers, the Daily Telegraph reported. A dozen police-issue flak jackets that can fit under a shirt or jacket will be distributed to drivers in tough areas of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. The scheme is a response to the June murder of a taxi driver in the Bronx. Another driver was shot and severely wounded during a robbery in the Queens neighborhood in December. |
