66.4% of people say they have a year-end party phobia, according to a survey published last week by the China Youth Daily. The survey polled 2,184 people. The biggest concern for 51.3% was that the party requires a lot of effort. Up to 86.4% are willing to actively participate in the party, while 40.7% only want to attend, and 30.7% are forced to perform. |

French glossy celebrity magazine Gala is speculating that France's first lady, Carla Bruni, wants to become pregnant before her husband, Nicholas Sarkozy, faces elections in 2012, the Guardian reports. The model turned singer is reported to be desperate to "offer" her husband President Nicolas Sarkozy a baby some time in the next two years. Bruni, 43, has a nine-year-old son from a previous relationship, while Sarkozy has three sons from two previous marriages, and is already a grandfather. |

A 42-year-old man working as a security guard has been convicted of raping an 18-year-old male colleague and sentenced to one year in prison. This marks the first time in China that a man has been convicted of raping another man, the Legal Evening News reports. The court in Beijing condemned the man of wilful and malicious injury. A legal expert says the ruling represents progress in the legal system, but China still lags behind in the prosecution of gay assaults. |

A crematorium is planning to carry out "science-fiction" funerals including freeze-drying and even dissolving dead bodies, the Daily Telegraph reports. Cambridge City Crematorium has proposed a set of gruesome after-death arrangements that they say are more environmentally-friendly than traditional funerals. Bosses called for a 21st century "commercial approach" towards handling death and asked Cambridge City Council to let them use futuristic technologies. Plans include using liquid nitrogen to chill a body to -196 Celsius, so it is brittle enough to be broken into small pieces for disposal. |
