| After analyzing almost 1,000 remains from ancient Egypt and Greece, researchers only found a handful of possible cancer cases, Metro Online reports. They also found precious little reference made to the symptoms of cancer in ancient literature. The first reports in scientific literature of distinctive tumors have only occurred in the past 200 years. "In industrialized societies, cancer is second only to cardiovascular disease as a cause of death," said Rosalie David of Manchester University. "In ancient times, it was extremely rare. There is nothing in the natural environment that can cause cancer. So it has to be a man-made disease, down to pollution and changes to our diet and lifestyle." |

Under Iran's Islamic law, amputations are usually reserved for habitual thieves. |

The local procuratorate in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, confirmed Friday that Pan, the teacher's father, has been arrested. The girl's mother died last year and her father works in another city, leaving her to lodge with her teacher and several other people for 5 years. "Leaving children to lodge with their teachers has been popular in Wenzhou for many years because people always believe in teachers as guardians," said a local resident. There are at least 100,000 children left behind, and some live at school, with grandparents or with other relatives. |
