| Aretha Wilson, the woman accused of slashing Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio's face with a wine glass, pleaded no contest Friday to the 2005 attack and is expected to serve two years in prison, AFP reports. Sentencing is scheduled for November 22 in Los Angeles County Superior Court. During a hearing earlier this year, witness Eustace Hicks said he and DiCaprio were leaving a party in Hollywood Hills with another friend on June 17, 2005, when Wilson appeared and cursed at the friend before attacking DiCaprio. DiCaprio was rushed to hospital and received stitches to his face and ear. Wilson fled to Canada after the attack. |

His wife Ruth Madoff's 10.5-carat diamond engagement ring has fetched the highest price, at US$550,000 (3.64m yuan). Officials said his possessions brought in about US$2 million (12.6m yuan) for the victims of his US$65 billion Ponzi scheme. |

| A teenager who falsely reported a rape is now serving a 12-month sentence, the Daily Mail reports. Amanda Bradley texted her boyfriend that she had been raped, and police arrested the accused attacker – Bradley's ex-boyfriend – in her bedroom in April in Bolton, Greater Manchester in the UK. Three months later, Bradley admitted to police that she'd lied because she had had "enough of him." "Every time I got a boyfriend, he still wanted sex with me and everything like that," Bradley said. |

| U.S. researchers have found that low levels of vitamin D may lead to deterioration in certain leukemia patients, Xinhua reports. The findings result from a study of 390 chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients, 30 percent of whom had insufficient vitamin D levels (less than 25 nanograms per milliliter) at the time of cancer diagnosis. After a median follow-up of three years, patients with insufficient vitamin D levels were 66 percent more likely to have disease progression and to require chemotherapy. They also had a twofold increased risk of death, compared to those with adequate vitamin D levels. The study also found that increasing vitamin D levels in patients was linked to longer survival times. |
