| Some southerners are hoping local governments can provide central heating as the temperature in south China has dropped 5 to 14 degrees from normal levels since Oct. 21, when a cold air current invaded the region, the People's Daily reported. However, some argue that it will cost too much for an area with generally mild winters anyway. In addition, coal is not as abundant there as in the north. Currently, central heating is only available in some affluent communities, while the majority uses air conditioners, electric heaters and blankets, coal stoves, and charcoal for heat. |
據《人民日報》報道，10月21日以來，一股冷空氣使得我國南方地區氣溫下降了5至14攝氏度，讓不少南方居民開始希望政府能集中供暖。有反對者認為，南方地區的冬天較為溫和，集中供暖的話成本很高，而且該地區的煤炭資源也相對緊張。目前，南方地區僅有一些高檔小區實現了集中供暖，大部分居民仍主要用空調、電暖爐、電熱毯、煤爐及木炭取暖。 |

| Forbes' China Rich List, released Thursday, shows the number of Chinese billionaires has ballooned to 128, from 79 last year, following America's 400, Forbes reported on its website. The total wealth of the 400 people on the new China list rose to US$423 billion, from US$314 billion a year earlier. This year's 400 list has more than 100 people who were not members last year. The minimum amount of wealth needed to make this year's 400 list is US$425 million, up from US$300 million last year. No. 1 on the list is Zong Qinghou of Wahaha with US$8 billion. Robin Li of Baidu comes in second with US$7.2 billion. Liang Wengen of Sany Group, with US$5.9 billion, is third. |

| Computer hardware problems were the major reason for a US missile site's malfunction that disrupted communications this past Saturday. According to CNN, the site holds 50 Minuteman III missiles, which are land-based nuclear weapons. These standby intercontinental ballistic missiles are controlled by five underground control centers. Four went back online on Wednesday when the Air Force and Strategic Command launched an investigation. According to the US military, investigators are not ruling anything out, but there is no indication of intentional malicious activity. |

| Al Jazeera reported that Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, in an audio tape released to the Qatar TV station Wednesday said that the kidnapping of five French citizens in Niger last month is the result of French injustice against Muslims. Bin Laden called on France to stop meddling in Muslim affairs in North and West Africa. Also on the tape, Bin Laden urged France to withdraw from Afghanistan, calling it an unjust war, and criticized France's plan to ban the wearing of full-face veils in public – a law to be implemented next year. |

| To catch the man who punctured his tire, a car owner slept in his car for 22 nights, the Beijing Times reported. He lives in a community in the Daxing District of Beijing, and his tires were punctured three times last month. Determined to catch the vandal, he began sleeping in his car on the night of Oct. 3 and eventually confronted the tire slasher in the early morning of Oct. 25. The vandal turned out to be a male neighbor, and the police detained him the next day. |
據《京華時報》報道，為了抓住扎他車胎的人，高先生在車里連續睡了22個晚上。高先生家住北京大興某小區。上個月，他的車胎被扎了3次。10月3日晚上，決意要抓住扎胎人的高先生開始搬進車里守株待兔，終于在25日清晨與作案人碰面。不過，此人竟是高先生的一位鄰居。據悉，警方已于26日將其抓獲。 |
