| Master's students' theses in China are showing less academic worth these days, according to a public survey jointly conducted by China Youth Daily and Net Ease (163.com). People who took the survey said plagiarism is becoming serious in published theses and that master's students' paying to publish is increasingly prevalent because of publication pressure imposed by universities. The reason for the trend is the limitation in the current evaluation system that emphasizes the "publish or perish" principle, said Prof. Xiong Bingqi from Shanghai Jiaotong University. |

| China's Ministry of Railways has raised the children's half-price ticket threshold from 1.1-1.4 to 1.2-1.5 meters, West China Cosmopolitan Daily reports. A child shorter than 1.2 meters accompanying an adult passenger can ride for free. The new regulation will be effective Wednesday. The new regulations also limit the luggage weight for high-speed bullet train passengers to 20 kilos or less. Regular trains also put a limit on luggage weight but it is rarely observed or enforced. |

| A Ministry of Health statement revealed that China has had 68,000 AIDS-related deaths this year as of October, almost 20,000 more deaths than the same period last year, Xinhua reports. Health ministry officials also said the total number of registered AIDS patients and HIV carriers have surpassed 370,000, including 130,000 AIDS patients. Yunnan, Henan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Guangdong and Xinjiang account for a disproportionate 77.1% of the country's HIV/AIDS sufferers. Meanwhile, sex is the most prevalent method of HIV transmission in the country. |
