Playboy takes buyout offer from founder |
Playboy Enterprises Inc. has agreed to an offer from founder Hugh Hefner to take the firm private after he raised his bid by 12 percent, BBC reported. Hefner-controlled vehicle Icon Acquisition Holding offered US$6.15 a share for publicly-listed Playboy, which values the firm at US$210 million. Hefner set up Playboy magazine in 1953. Circulation and advertising revenues have been falling. The firm's management has been trying to transform it from a publishing and TV business into a "brand management" company by licensing out the Playboy name and rabbit ears for a range of products. |

Douglas, 66, announced in August that doctors had diagnosed him with stage IV throat cancer but he was optimistic he would recover. On "Today," Douglas said he had lost 32 pounds during treatment but had recently added back 12 pounds. He said he had lost a lot of muscle mass and that radiation treatment caused his salivary ducts to stop functioning for a time. |

Mental health of women in crisis |
A survey of 2,000 girls and women in England and Wales shows that around two-thirds have had mild to moderate mental health problems, equivalent to 15.2 million girls and women, the Guardian reported. Almost a third of women over 18 have taken antidepressants. At least 13 percent women experiencing mental health problems had quit a job, while 44 percent had taken some time off work; more than a quarter had been off work for at least a week. The findings into the extent of mental health problems experienced by girls as young as 12 were reached after the group expanded the medical definition of "common mental health disorders" as defined by the Department of Health. The definition of mental health problems used in the new study includes low self-esteem, poor self-confidence, and stress. |
